Steve, Walter and I launched out of Pillar Point Harbor on Friday morning. We got to the ramp at 7:30 a.m. to find no other boats launching. There was one guy in a Whaler fishing solo already back with his limit. We headed out with eager anticipation, hoping to get our limits too. The water outside the harbor was just as flat as it was inside.
We started trolling anchovies right out of the jaws, hoping to hook a salmon looking to get in the harbor. We trolled around for a lot of nothing. I mentioned something about a ten o'clock bite and, Bam! Hook-up! I'm fighting a fish while Steve brings up the other lines. Nice and easy the fish comes up along the starboard side, turns, heads straight for the boat and dives down under and out of the reach of the net, and pops off! AHHG! Oh well. It's still early. Soon, it is Walter's turn as his rod goes off! We tell Walter to keep the line tight as we bring up the other rods. He is having trouble reeling so we put the reel in "low" and he slowly reels her in. Nice and easy, Walter brings her to the awaiting net where Steve scoops her up! The big, 15 pound chinook brought a big smile to Walter's face! We continued fishing until 1:30 but there were no more hits for us. It seemed like we were fighting the kelp and kingfish all day. You had to keep checking your bait every couple of minutes or so or you weren't fishing. All in all it was a great day to be out on the water!
